Hi, I’m Katherine Lukey and I am Deputy Concertmaster with the Opera Australia Orchestra. In previous roles, I have also served as Assistant Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Principal First Violin of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Guest roles include the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Principal 2nd violin with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
I teach privately in Sydney, and particularly enjoy orchestral audition coaching. I am proud of the musicians I have helped win auditions, and I would love to do the same for others. I have also taught at the Rising Stars Conservatorium Open Academy (University of Sydney), and have completed Level 1 Suzuki Teacher Training.
I enjoy performing as a soloist, and have appeared with Queensland Symphony, Melbourne Chamber, Metropolitan, Sydney Conservatorium, and Darwin Symphony Orchestras. I also won the Hepzibah Menuhin and Kendall Violin Competitions, and was an ABC Young Performers Award string finalist.
My own teachers include Tibor Varga and Silvia Marcovici (Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Graz), and Alice Waten (University of Sydney). I have a Diploma of Modern Languages in German, and my Masters academic research focused on violin pedagogy and the comparison of various schools of teaching.
