Brendan Nguyen is an award-winning concert pianist who displays uncommon versatility as a performer, artist, and producer. His bold programming style, infusion of technology, and ambitiously produced concert concepts aim to explore new musical territory while casting a contemporary eye on the established canon.
Brendan has over 20 years of teaching experience in private and classroom settings. He has taught many award-winning pianists who have gone on to study at top music schools and conservatories, and continues to teach students of all skill levels.
As a stalwart interpreter of contemporary music, Brendan has performed at concert halls and series across North America and Europe, including the REDCAT Theater at the Disney Hall, Zipper Hall, Merkin Hall, Bachzaal, The Stone, Monday Evening Concert Series, Festival Musica Sacra Maastricht, wasteLAnd Concert Series, Shandelee International Festival of Music, Bowdoin International Festival, and the Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music. Brendan has recorded with Carrier Records, Populist Records, and has worked closely with composers such as George Crumb, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, and Lewis Nielson. He has also performed world and regional premieres of works by Wojtek Blecharz, Aaron Helgeson, Beat Furrer, Carolyn Chen, Nicholas Deyoe, Clint McCallum, Josiah Oberholtzer, Katherina Rosenberger, and Pulitzer Prize winner Roger Reynolds.
Brendan has also performed alongside the world’s foremost interpreters of contemporary music. Among these figures are Steven Schick (percussion), Aleck Karis (piano), Alice Teyssier (flute/soprano), Jonathan Hepfer (percussion), and Leslie Leytham (mezzo-soprano). He holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (BMus) and UC San Diego (MA, DMA).
Brendan is also an adjudicator, music director, associate instructor at the San Diego Piano Academy, and is Co-Artistic Director of the multi-disciplinary concert series Project [BLANK].
