Hi! I'm Emma Gerstein, and I've been second flute in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 2017. I grew up in Chicago, so joining the CSO was always my ultimate dream. I feel incredibly lucky to get to play in an orchestra with such a storied history. Prior to joining the CSO I played principal flute in Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra in New Zealand. Living in New Zealand for a couple of years was a wonderful adventure, and I really miss my friends and colleagues there, as well as the gorgeous scenery.

I was also a flute fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, FL, where I learned the life and schedule of an orchestral musician, all whilst getting coached by some of the best wind players from around the world and playing under Michael Tilson Thomas. It was a really valuable experience.

I have been teaching college and graduate students at Roosevelt University for a couple of years now, and I also coach the students in the Civic Orchestra - flutists and other instrumentalists alike. As a teacher I really enjoy trying to help my students learn to solve problems and be creative. I want them to sound like the best versions of themselves, not like me or some other player. I am a big believer in fundamentals!

I studied with Robert Langevin and Thomas Robertello, and a lot of my approach to playing and teaching comes from these two amazing players.

I'd love to help you improve and learn more about how to become a better flutist and musician.
